Can He do better?
A few years ago, I started watching a television show and after a while, I started singing the chorus of the main song of the episode. As I imitated the singer and belted out, “You can’t do better,” I stopped and pondered the words I sung. I investigated the message of the song and it was about how a man couldn’t do better than the singer. It made me begin to think about the songs I would sing with conviction growing up, even when I was too young to have a boyfriend. The songs were about being the best or better girl for a man or songs that belittled a man’s current girlfriend because she wasn’t as great as her. In that moment, I realized the foundation of these songs was the spirit of comparison.
When I was younger, I constantly thought because I was smart and liked a myriad of things that I was somehow the best pick out of the women around me. However, as you know if you have read previous blog posts, my self-esteem took a major hit as time and time again, I would be passed over for other women. I would constantly wonder what other women had that I didn’t have.
What I didn’t realize is that we are all special. No matter how basic or sophisticated one may think he or she is, there is someone for that person…which also means that person will not be compatible with everybody. So, a “basic” woman may be the best for a certain man and a “sophisticated” woman will not be the right woman for every man.
Think about the story of Esther. The king had multiple women to choose as a wife. I am sure some of those women were accomplished; others may not have been as much. However, there was something about Esther that prompted the king to make her queen.
So, instead of us singing, “You can’t do better,” “you belong with me,” “she can’t love you,” etc., let’s just accept that we are not compatible with that person and that God will bring us the person we are suitable with in the right time.
In the meantime, let’s be Ruth in the field and do as Paul suggests, which is to spend time doing the Lord’s work and think of how to please him (1 Corinthians 7:32).
When we are ready, God will bring us our person.
