Speak Life
During college, I believed that if I spoke the opposite of what I wanted that life would pleasantly surprise me. After being hurt by one too many guys, I started saying things like, “I’m a strong, independent woman who don’t need a man,” and “I would never get married.” What I didn’t realize was that I was cursing myself. Proverbs 18:21 (NIV) says: “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
Because we have the power of God within us and because we are God’s creation, we have the ability to speak life or death to situations. When I was in college, I didn’t understand this concept at all. I constantly spoke negatively against several areas of my life and then, I complained when I didn’t see positive results.
Now, God is not a genie. You can’t simply say, “I want to wake up to a million dollars,” and the next day, it’s in your bank account. But what I am saying is that what you speak is powerful because it’s also what you believe. Matthew 15:18 (NIV) says: “But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them.” And why would God bless you with something you constantly mentally and verbally express He won’t do for you?
Hebrews 11:6 says it is impossible to please God without faith. Therefore, expressing your unbelief, the opposite of faith, will not get God to move. Furthermore, if you’re not even preparing yourself for the blessing, why would He bless you with it, knowing you’re going to fumble it.
I can honestly say how I lived when I would spew negative rhetoric versus now is completely different. For example, I know I am somebody’s wife; therefore, I’m preparing myself for being the Godly wife God has called me to be by healing myself, taking better care of my house, learning different skills, etc. When I would cry constantly about never having anyone, I never once thought of the type of man I wanted and what I would have to do to become attractive to that person. This may be the worst comparison ever, but I’m going to go with it. If I want to be a brain surgeon, I would have to prepare to go to college and medical school, correct? But before that, I would have to focus on my grades in high school so I could go to college. I couldn’t just wild out and flunk high school and still say I want to become a brain surgeon. No, I would have to prepare.
It’s a cyclical pattern. What you speak out of your mouth is what’s embedded in your heart. What’s embedded in your heart are the things you constantly think on. What you constantly think on is what you eventually end up doing. Philippians 4:8 tells us to think of things that are pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, praiseworthy, etc. There’s a saying that says if you say something long enough, you’ll begin to believe it.
Therefore, if you want to be married, if you want kids, if you want the promises God has promised you, come into agreement of it and speak it! Even if there’s a smidgeon of doubt, speak positively anyway because Matthew 17:20 says faith of a mustard seed can move a mountain.
I encourage you on today to speak life to everything God has promised you.
One way to show Him that He can trust you with the blessing is by speaking favorably over the blessing.
